UCPN (Maoist) splits, finally; CC meeting of new party underway
KATHMANDU, June 18: UCPN (Maoist), the largest party of the erstwhile Constituent Assembly, has formally split on Monday, with the dissident Mohan Baidya faction, announcing the severing of ties with the party establishment and launching their own party.
The national cadres meet of the dissident faction that concluded today in the capital made the announcement of the opening of a new party named ´Communist Party of Nepal, Maoist´ having a total of 44 central committee members, Prajwol Shrestha, a state committee member of the party, told Republica.
The meeting has also appointed Mohan Baidya as chairman, Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ as general secretary and CP Gajurel as secretary, Bharat Bam, central committee member said.
“The remaining vacant posts will be fulfilled by the central committee meeting of the new party,” Bam added.
Meanwhile, the first meeting of the CC members of the new party is taking place at the moment. The meeting will decide the office bearers of the new party, according to Prabhat Chalaune, another state committee member. The newly appointed CC will function till the party´s general convention.
Just a few days ago, party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, in the party establishment´s bid to reconcile long-standing differences within the party, had floated a seven-point proposal for party unity, only to be turned down by the dissident faction.
Baidya cadres give nod to forming new party
The national cadres meet of the dissident faction of UCPN (Maoist) is underway in Boudha, with conference representatives, divided into 20 groups, holding group discussions on documents presented by their leaders.
All the 20 groups have supported political document presented by Maoist Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya,who leads the disgruntled faction, increasing the chances of the camp announcing the launch of a new party. In the document, the Communist Party of Nepal – Maoist (Revolutionary) has been proposed the name of the new party.
The representatives also held discussion on the document by Dev Gurung on statute of the new party. Today´s is the last day of the three-day national meet called by the dissident faction and participated by some 3,000 representatives from across the country.
